Relationships ft. Mental Health

Sometimes when you’re struggling with your mental health it feels hard to maintain relationships. I know, for me, I used to feel like a burden for everyone around me especially those close to me. How could I expect them to be able to deal with me when I couldn’t even handle myself? I found myself thinking this way constantly at the beginning of my current relationship. I had anxieties and insecurities that I was too afraid to share. This actually caused me to project a lot on to my partner, which wasn’t fair. Thankfully he understood my struggles and was incredibly patient with me and still is at times when my thoughts get the better of me. I consider myself insanely lucky to have someone so supportive and thanks to him I’ve learned a lot about the importance of communication in relationships especially while struggling with my mental health.

As I’ve said in many previous posts, talking is the best way to seek help and guidance. Holding in your feelings can sometimes cause you to have outbursts and hurt others around you or withdraw from your relationships with them entirely. As hard as it seems to open up about something so sensitive, you’ll instantly see how much good it can do, especially in regards to your relationships whether they’re a significant other, family member or friend. It makes it easier for them to understand how you’re feeling and what they can do to ease your mind and help your mentality. Another important thing is to make sure that you’re there for them too, one sided relationships are never healthy.

One thing is to make sure that you don’t become codependent on your partner or friend(s). You need to remember that you are your own person and although they provide you with that feeling of protection and relief you still need to learn how to cope with your mental health yourself. There’s nothing wrong with having certain people that make you feel safe but learn to love yourself before you love others and embrace your independence!

For those still finding the strength to tell their loved ones, you can still find help. Check out the links below for help that may suit you a bit more at this time <3
